Pennsylvania Cooking Schools

A state with a long and rich farming heritage, Pennsylvania has a large number of farmers markets and roadside stalls offering fresh produce. Look for fresh corn, mushrooms, apples, potatoes, wheat, grapes and vegetables, and consider taking home some preserves or pickles. Although not technically on the coast, Pennsylvania is close enough to the Atlantic shore to reap the bounties of its harvest: Fresh seafood is common throughout the state. Other favorites are the products of the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Co., Weaver's Lebanon Bologna and the wines of the Mt. Hope Winery and Nissley Vineyard.

In the Pennsylvania Dutch region, sample such specialties as shoofly pie (rich brown-sugar or molasses pie, with a crumbly mix of flour and sugar), scrapple (seasoned ground meat and cornmeal, molded and fried), chicken corn soup and chicken pot pie.

In Lancaster, the Central Market offers an appealing inventory of fresh produce, cheeses and other prepared foods. And, of course, there's the Philly cheese-steak: All but strict vegetarians must binge and try at least one of these sandwiches loaded with beef, cheese and grilled onions.

Bucks County has a number of charming country-inn restaurants to choose from, as well as two wineries: Buckingham Valley and Peace Valley Vineyards. The variety of international food is greatest in the larger cities: Italian seems to be the most common.
